Response Journal of Short Story "The Necklace"
After reading and understanding the story "The Necklace" I then tried to find a video version of the story on Youtube. And finally I found several videos of the necklace with various versions, such as an animated version, or just a summary of the story. And what makes me a little surprised is that I found a video in the form of a short film with the same story, and this is very, very interesting in my opinion, because this is exactly like the story of the necklace that I have read. To view a short film version of the necklace, please click here!
I think this story has a surprising ending. Especially at the end when Forestier stated that the necklace was just an imitation necklace. It had not occurred to me that the ending would be like this. from the title to the part where Mathilde borrows Forestier's necklace. I thought that Mathilde borrowed the necklace and she never returned it. He will forget to return the necklace to Forestier. So that Mathilde benefits from this story, but Forestier will experience a difficult life because the necklace is stolen. But it turned out that the ending was not what I expected. So this story plot is quite interesting for me.
Talking about the characters in this story, in my opinion Madame Losiel’s character is greed and never being happy enough person. It was proven that when she attended a party he wanted to wear a fancy dress. Not only that, she also wanted to use luxurious gem accessories so that it made her feel confident. So, she chose to borrow a necklace from her friend. And that’s why she was in debt for 10 years.
I think neither Mathilde Loisel nor Madame. Forestier has an equally high ego. Madame. Forestier did not mention the necklace fake to Mathilde because she felt embarrassed, her ego to admit it was too high, because she was always seen as a rich and luxurious person. Besides that Mathilde Loisel also has the same ego, she is too embarrassed to admit that the necklace she borrowed was lost and she replaced it with a new one. Even though her husband had suggested telling Forestier the truth.
If Mathilde had immediately said that the necklace was lost to Forestier maybe things wouldn't be that sad now, she wouldn't have had as much debt as now, if only from the start she knew that the necklace was fake. Mathilde Loisel will forever question herself and ask “What would life be like if I had never borrowed the necklace".
If I were to write this story, I would like to change the ending of this story. Because I think the ending is unfair to Mathilde Loisel. For 10 years she and her husband have struggled to pay off debts because of a fake necklace.
After knowing Mathilde's difficult life because of her fake necklace, Forestier would be better off if she apologized to Mathilde, that she was not honest about the necklace from the start. Then she should help Mathilde and her husband to improve their life. he will be patient to hand back the necklace that Mathilde bought to let him sell the necklace and let the money from the sale of the necklace belong to Mathilde. Mathilde only needs to pay Forestier as much as the price of her fake necklace. it would be a fair ending for all. Forestier does not have to regret handing over the original necklace to Mathilde, because her life is more than enough now, but is inversely related to Mathilde. The lesson that can be taken from this story is, be yourself according to your real situation. Don't force anything beyond our capabilities. And keep the ego away which could one day get us into trouble.
